This bowl is not 5 ounces. It actually holds 16 ounces of water. It has a outside diameter of 5 inches and an inside diameter of just under 4 and 1/2 inches. We keep ours in the freezer so it is ready at all times. Your ice cream will not melt before you finish it. Also the bowl is 2 and 1/8 inches deep. It is of very high quality.

One of the most popular food items items we have when camping with the scouts is some sort of steaming hot chili, stew or similar. Most camping bowls are not insulated. We also usually do not have a table to set our bowls on, and are stuck trying hold and eat out of a bowl that steaming hot. Or we can just wait until the food is cold. Niether option is very good. This insulated bowl solves the problem and works great. It is also very rugged, and you do not have to worry about it breaking. The bright color makes it hard to misplace. Some may consider it a bit heavy for ultralight backpacking. I have not tried it with ice cream yet.

By Girly Girl I bought these bowls over 4 years ago when they were featured at Crate and Barrel. I loved the colors and bought all four and the matching spoons. In that time, over FOUR YEARS of use and dish washing (sometimes mistakenly washed on the bottom rack even!) these bowls are still as great at keeping cold things cold as the day I bought them. The only thing to note is that since it is a stainless steel inner, small marks can show if you use metal spoons instead of the matching melamine ones (the men in my household will use a pink bowl, but not the cumbersome pink matching spoon!). It's not a huge flaw, but something worth mentioning.
They are, as another reviewer stated, large enough for LOTS of ice cream, you could probably squeeze a whole pint in if you wanted! I am so glad to find these being offered on amazon as they are a great gift for summer birthdays or any ice cream lover year round. Like another reviewer, I have used mine for hot items like soups and stews as well, and in that respect the food stays hot without it being a burden in your hands. I have never tried freezing the bowls though, great idea- worth getting an extra couple for the sideline! If you love ice cream, you need a set of these bowls!

By Jersey Chuck This bowl is very sturdy and will hold three scoops of ice cream easily (my limit) with all the "Fixens". Keeps the ice cream cold and your hand warm. Very nice stainless bowl that cleans up nicely!
