100% Leak and spill proof Jun 07, 2007
By JBG I had a friend with this mug and I have been looking for the same closing lid design ever since. It is the only lid design I trust to close, stay closed and not leak one drop after I tossed the mug in my backpack for a day's worth of running around.
I didn't realize that no other mug besides the ones made by Trudeau had that lid mechanism. Believe me you will be 100% satisfied if you are looking for a mug that can roll around in any orientation and never leak. This is not some simple snap closed drinking hole type lid you see on other travel mugs, this is a fantastic sealing mechanism.
Add to that the fact you can drink from any side of the cup, not just a little hole that lines up with your mouth if you hold the mug the right way.
I don't know why you would ever buy another mug when this one is available. It even comes with a 5 year warranty on the closing/sealing mechanism. Really this mug is just shy of a thermos for leak/spill proof reliability, but without the bulk and extra parts to keep clean and not lose.
I can't comment on how long it keeps things "hot" or "cold" as I like my tea just warm and it keeps it warm a pretty long time, 4-6 hours at least.
Trudeau also makes a version of this mug with no handle and no leather, which is the one I bought (the non 'Boardroom' version), but I don't see it on Amazon here.
This is a real travel mug, the only one I would ever buy again, as soon as I found a place that sold them, I bought the 2 they had on the shelf and came back a week later to by the 3 more they got back in for gifts. I have already given one to a horseback riding friend of mine and she loves it.
Great mug, great closing mechanism design and I am more than a satisfied customer.

bad seal design Aug 03, 2005
By D. Hamm Looks nice. Locking lid is watertight. BUT, on mine, there was a gap in the seal between the aluminum and plastic on the inside that allows liquid to get in and fester. I couldn't figure out why it kept smelling like spoiled milk even after several extreme washings (and no, I did not put it in a dishwasher). That was because there WAS spoiled coffee with milk up inside the gap between the plastic 'seal' and aluminum body! While cleaning, I noticed that stuff was coming out from under the plastic rim.
I took it apart and resealed the lip with epoxy, but I should NOT have had to reengineer their product!
For this price, that is ridiculous. (p.s. I only paid $9 for it at Target, so maybe I had an 'earlier' version).

Sorta spillproof but not really Dec 18, 2008
By italtrav If you fill this mug with the lid in the closed position and then screw the lid on, it is very nearly leakproof. But once you drink from it, liquid gets trapped between the lower seal and the holes in the lid top. Then, even if in the Closed position, there is a fair bit of liquid to dribble out. Not really, truly ready for prime time but OK if used with caution. I'm on the lookout for something better.

black chunks in my coffee Jul 15, 2011
By R.N.
"coffee addict"
Update: I bought 2 of these and they were so classy looking and leakproof that I bought 2 more. LOVED them for months as they worked just as advertised. However after a few months they started to smell horrible- couldn't figure where the smell was coming from. But I did notice that when you washed the cup that no matter how many times you poured the water out, every time you turned it back upright there was more water in it. It was getting trapped under the rim. Then I started noticing black chunks of something in my coffee. It took awhile to figure out that it was coming from up under the rim. There is a small gap there that allows coffee to get in and mold. I thought I could fix that by taking an old toothbrush and running the bristles up under the rim. ALOT of black stuff came out. I was totally grossed out, but thought the problem was taken care of. WRONG!!!! Every time I washed them more black stuff came out. How much is in there??? How long have I been drinking mold?? As beautiful as these are and as leakproof as they are I can't bring myself to drink out of them anymore. They are still in perfect condition but today I threw them away. Breaks my heart!!! But it's not worth getting sick from drinking chunks of mold. If they corrected this design flaw I would buy them again in a heartbeat.

moldy Sep 26, 2011
By Jules I used this mug for approx. 8 months. I was very careful to empty and wash/rinse after each use. I noticed a horrible musty smell coming from inside the mug. I thought it was the lid at first so I unscrewed the lid and cleaned thoroughly. However it came from under the rim at the top of the inside of the mug. I am unable to clean the mold out and have to throw the mug away.
