Happy with the Pancake Pen Jun 19, 2010
By K. Montgomery I picked this up after reading the reviews at Williams Sonoma. I never thought a gadget such as this would come in so handy! If you ever tried pancake molds and they didn't work out so hot, try this pen. It really keeps things clean and it works for all types of batter (cupcake molds, etc.). If you don't finish the pancake batter, simply put the cap on and store in the fridge for the next day. Clean up is simple... dishwasher safe. Love it!

Ding Ding Ding Ding, we have a winner..... May 03, 2011
By Cannon There's nothing fancy or spectacular about the Tovolo Pancake Pen. But who needs fancy and spectacular when what you really need is something that actually WORKS. And the Pancake Pen is up to the task.
Here's the deal: When you make pancakes and you want to avoid the mess on the counter, the Pancake Pen is your best friend. Likewise, when you want to make interesting shapes or get the batter into the animal shaped mold so that your lion pancake actually looks like a lion instead of a beached whale, the Pancake Pen is your best friend.
I think the item works best when you make the batter in a bowl and then pour the batter into the Pancake Pen. This is for two reasons: 1. You'll be surprised at how fast you can consume 3 cups of batter when making pancakes... so being able to refill from a bowl is smart. (Do it over the sink, no mess). 2. If you use a light and fluffy mix, the rapid expansion in the Pen will result in a over foamed nightmare if you miscalculate and try to mix the batter inside the pen.
The Pancake Pen is diswasher safe; however, take note - there is a small silicone seal in the outer rim on the underside of the nozzle top. The seal helps make sure you don't get batter leakage with use. (If you snickered at "Batter Leakage" because it's so close to bladder leakage, you're warped, but probably very funny). Anyway, this seal can come out of the rim during hand or machine washing. I've used the Pen without the seal and noticed no significant problems (there was no batter leakage) but I do believe the seal serves a purpose, so be aware it's there and verify it's still there when you drain the sink or empty the dishwasher.
The Pancake Pen allows for flawless and direct delivery of batter to pancake molds, something that can be difficult when you pour from a bowl or try to spoon out. Also, it makes it very easy to create pancakes of any size straight from the pen. And at a price that is under $10.00, this is a kitchen gadget that is reasonably priced and a solid value. The aluminum pancake dispensors cost at least 6 to 7 times what this item costs, and they are larger and bulkier. The Pancake Pen is easily stored in the pantry, next to the pancake batter.
Also, you can store unused batter, in the pen, in the refrigerator (subject to batter instructions, of course). It fits in door compartments, easily.
We've had ours over one year and it's in excellent shape. We've had no trouble cleaning the product in the dishwasher.
They make a separate Pen for other baked goods (I'd pay more for multiple tops, and would rather not have to buy an entire unit) but for pancakes, you can't go wrong.

Easy Aug 28, 2010
By Ayanna C. Dookie My boyfriend is a pancake fanatic so I make pancakes twice a week (weekends - who has time to cook pancakes monday-friday). Very easy to use. I add all ingredients to the container and shake. However, it's a challenge adding the mix because the mouth can't accommodate the cup diameter of my measuring cup. Also, the dry mix sometimes gets caught in the spout when shaking.
I wish It also came with the muffin pen spout because essentially, they're the same product, just with different size spouts. The spout is removal so it would save me buying (and storing) 2 pens - but I guess that's how Tovolo makes money.

A $10 Squeeze Bottle?!? Feb 14, 2012
By biddypunk I absolutely do not understand any demand for this gadget or its price tag. Sure enough, I came home for the holidays and my stepmother had added it to her arsenal of uni-taskers. I've been using a 97 cent squeeze bottle to make fun pancakes for YEARS and I simply see no reason to pay 9 extra dollars for the exact same functionality. Sure, the tip is silicone, but I can't think of a reason you'd ever be applying it directly to the cooking surface. The squeeze bottle has an opening size that can be enlarged by snipping it off, and the intact version offers super fine detail- the pancake pen does not. Ridiculous.

Cupcakes all have to have the same volume of batter so that they bake evenly, and this product helps with that. It also helps with keeping batter off the pan between cups, an added bonus. A funnel helps to get the batter into it.
