5They are okay.  Jun 07, 2011 By C. Kort "Solitary Suicide"
Some tips if you are going to buy this:
1) don't try any pry the ice out, you will destroy the product. Don't even try to open the ball once the water has frozen. Again, you will destroy the product. Instead run some water over it and try to slowly open it. You shouldn't need much force once a layer of water is between the ice and plastic
2) Don't expect perfectly round ice. Usually the ice pushes the mold open a little and looks a little morphed.
3) This is personal preference but I like clear ice. Boil distilled water wait for it to cool and use that in your mold. Before you boil the water though, rinse out the pot you are going to boil water in with the distilled water so there aren't any minerals left in the pot. Distilled water is only $1/gallon and sold at most grocery stores. Your ice still wont be completely clear but trust me, it will look a lot better. ENJOY

5Easy Breezy Ice Molds for Bourbon or scotch drinkers  Mar 05, 2011 By Mary N. Bucklew "HeartSleeve"
These four individual ice molds make the best large ice balls for serious bourbon or single malt scotch drinkers. For making a globe or ice ball, fill the plastic globes with water, clip the lid shut, freeze for 6 hours and VOILA, the perfect size for a single "rocks" glass with minimal "melt." They are easy to fill and even easier to remove after they are frozen - ice ball pops right out! Product says it can also be used for other liquids. Make several and keep them frozen in a plastic bag in the freezer!

5Good fun!  Jun 16, 2011 By TW
I use these for my cocktails, and whilst I'm sure there is some benefit to the shape in terms of not all melting at once, I just really like the shape.
It does take a little practice to get the fill level correct so the container doesn't pop open as it freezes (no spilling if it does open up as the edges have already frozen). Not a big deal, but if you overfill you won't get very round ice balls (they'll have a tire in the middle!).
Handy hint: If you fill them and let the water settle for a little while, the balls will come out less cloudy. I've heard boiling the water beforehand and letting cool will produce less cloudy ice too.

5Big Balls  Jun 06, 2011 By Daniel G. Lebryk
Aside from these reminding me of the television show Wipeout's big balls in the first elimination round, these are really great ice cube makers.

Big spherical ice cubes are a good looking alternative to ice cubes. They melt a lot slower than standard cubes, drinks are chilled quickly but drinks aren't diluted as fast as cubes. Almost every drink just looks better with these round balls in them.

The molds are easy to use. The mold is a hinged two piece design of a light weight translucent plastic. The top has a hole for filling the mold. There is a silicone plug permanently attached to the mold that covers the hole. The instructions recommend using hot water to make clear ice. My testing shows that this is not necessary, hot or cold water will yield an equal amount of cloudiness. Distilled or filtered water is a good idea.

Do not fill the molds completely with water. When water freezes, it expands. If the mold is filled much more than 3/4 full, the expanding ice will pop the mold halves apart and make deformed spheres. The molds don't break, they just pop apart.

After freezing, run the mold under water for a few seconds, then twist the two bumps apart to separate the mold halves, and the round ice ball will pop out.

The big advantage of a two piece sealed mold, the ice cannot absorb odors from the freezer. These make the freshest, cleanest tasting ice balls ever. The only down side, I had to find a plastic container to put the balls in the freezer.

It is possible to add things to the ice. I find making simple water ice is a great way to chill drinks.

These make a great companion to the Tovolo ice cube trays:

5Great alternative to other products.  Jan 11, 2012 By Edward A Yu
Having first owned the "Fusionbrands Silicone Ice Orb Vertical Ice Cube Tray" and then trying out "Whiskey Stones"--all for whiskey mind you--I finally moved on to the Prepara Ice Balls. I'm liking them.

And if you don't want to spend hundreds (thousands now) on that nifty copper ice ball maker you can find at the Japan Trend Shop, then this is perfect.

The ice balls don't come out perfect, but they get the job done. They cool drinks and last longer than our standard ice cubes--plus they look awesome.

Easy steps:
1.)fill up the balls, not too full as the water will expand when turning to ice.
2.)after frozen pop the tab up top and run cool water over it--this aids in loosing the ball.
3.)pry open the plastic and take the ice ball out (sometimes easier than other times).

I love em.
