Mortars and pestles have been around for thousands of years and have done the time tested job of crushing, grinding and powdering herbs, grains, spices, nuts, roots, teas and many more items. This style of grinding releases flavor best in seeds, herbs, spices and garlic without degrading them with the heat or excessive movement of an electric mixer, blender or chopper. Mortars and pestles are handy for crushing pills and supplements, too. Made of a beautiful caramelized bamboo this durable mortal and pestle will become a staple of your kitchen.

Wonderful kitchen tool! Nov 18, 2009
By Tivette A great kitchen tool that works quite nicely for grinding spices and the like. For extra hard items and a fine grind that will not get away from you, this tool does the job with no mess or fuss and pretty enough to leave out on display in the kitchen.

Bad design Apr 19, 2010
By B. Carver I gave it two stars instead of one because it looks really nice. The inside of the mortar flares out at the bottom and the pestle curves in, making it impossible to use that key section for effective grinding. I got it to grind coffee for use with my Aeropress (LOVE IT!!!) but it doesn't even come close to fulfilling the function. Maybe I'll use it as a cup though, because it does look really sweet and is solidly put together.

not very functional Dec 31, 2010
By jjoseph My main complaint after using it for a few days is that the curve/radius of pestle doesn't match that of the inside/bottom of the mortar. So when trying to grind something, the pestle only makes contact with the center of the mortar. I'm constantly tapping and shaking the mortar to get whatever I'm grinding into the middle so the pestle can contact it. The mismatch radii slows down the grinding process. Poor design.

Poor design Apr 05, 2011
By Molly Elmore
"pansyford"
I read the reviews of this product and ignored them because i was hoping they were a fluke. The design of this is very poor. the angle in the mortar (the bowl part) is not the same as the pestle (what you use to grind). so, all of the stuff ends up getting caught in the corner where you cannot grind it and have to scoop it out with a butter knife. I got this to grind garlic and herbs and this product is useless.

A Beautiful Wooden Set Jul 16, 2010
By Tina H. I was more than pleased when I received this set. It is made of high quality bamboo, smooth and of a perfect weight. Other wooden mortar & pestle sets that I have seen are usually too light or too heavy. I rub a bit of olive oil on mine before I use it, and it helps seal the wood so that the scent of whatever I am grinding doesn't absorb so much. I would highly recommend this product, and I will be buying several more as gifts.
