Mortars and pestles have been around for thousands of years ¿ long before kitchens existed they were already a classic utensil ¿ they do the job of crushing, grinding and powdering herbs, grains, spices, nuts, roots, teas ¿ all kinds of healthy eats. This style of grinding releases flavor best in seeds, herbs, spices and garlic. Mortars and pestles are handy for crushing pills and supplements, too. This octagonal-shaped mortar and pestle has a contoured bottoms & pestle head to hold the grindables in place. Porcelain is easy to clean, dishwasher safe and won't absorb food odors or stain.

Works Great Aug 25, 2009
By A. Doyle I am a nurse, and I bought this product to crush pills at work. I also bought it because another person reviewed this product and said it was good for crushing pills. They were right! It works way better than pill crushers. Now, I have everybody at work wanting to trade their pill crushers in for one of these!

Great Buy Feb 18, 2009

I love the simplicity of the white. This size is perfect for me whether I hold the bowl, or place the bowl on a flat surface. It has a nice weight to it, too. At this price, there is no excuse not to have one. I wish it came in more colors, though.

Depens on what you use it for Feb 09, 2012
By Tom I bought this product to make a small batch of pesto. I was told when you grind basil the flavor is much better.
I almost killed myself making it. You probably should only buy this product if you are looking for crushing some small grains, herbs, pills, etc.
PROS: Non Porous Material (did slightly stain from basil leaves) Mortar and Pestle have ruff surfaces for grinding Simple Classic Look
CONS: Pestle is small and hard to hold for a long period of time Fragile (it dropped about one foot from my hands to the Formica counter and it shattered) Bowl is VERY small
Basically for basic needs like herb and pill crushing, this should be fine. If you are looking to use it for long periods of time or crush large quantities of materials - look elsewhere.
