This 2.5" set does a big job at grinding up herbs, spices and pills. The bottom of the bowl is granulated to hold the herbs, spices, pills, etc. while the pestle grinds to whatever texture you choose. This style of grinding releases flavor best in seeds, herbs, spices and garlic. Porcelain is easy to clean, dishwasher safe and won't absorb food odors or stain.

Tiny but it works May 21, 2008

This tiny mortar and pestle is not for someone with big hands. You can only do a small amount of quick grinding but that's the beauty of it. I like that it fits nicely in the corner of my silverware drawer and doesn't take up space in the cupboard. If you want to do more crushing/grinding at a time, I suggest getting the bigger size.

Does the job as required Sep 12, 2009
By NYAutumn I was looking for a small mortar and pestle to crush aspirin for my arthritic dog. This is easy to use, crushes the pills evenly and I am able to mix it in with her wet food. No more wondering if she actually ate the asprin or if it will turn up under a couch where she spit it out whole!

Just what I wanted! Dec 22, 2008

This is exactly what I wanted! I saw many on numerous sites that were either the same or bigger, all for a lot more money, but I didn't need bigger. This is perfect and you can't beat the price!

Simple, tiny, as advertised Feb 10, 2010
By Maigray It's as tiny as it says, but simple and effective if all you need is to crush pills, which is what I bought it for. No problems, it's exactly what it says it is.

Passable Jun 29, 2009
By suave As others have noted the photo doesn't show (it does now) correct mortar, the actual one is round. It is rather small, so do not expect to be able to grind more than half a teaspoon of spices at a time. That being said, at $2.49 it is cheap, does the job, and makes a decent filler for those $24.99 Amazon items.
