The GrillMat was designed by Taming the Flame author and creator of www.girlsattheGrill.com, Elizabeth Karmel, with the intention of solving two problems of outdoor grilling--food sticking to the grill and food falling between the grates. The 11 3/4 x 15 3/4 GrillMat is made from a platinum process silicone that is heat safe up to 500 degrees farenheit and is the only 100 % non-stick cooking sheet designed for indirect heat use on the outdoor grill. The GrillMat is to be used with indirect heat (not over an open flame) which is the preferred grilling method for delicate fish and small foods and vegetables. The GrillMat is perforated with small holes to allow fats and juices to drip away from the food and create the distinctive grill flavor.

By Bill I have been using a grill mat for 4 months and I love it. I grill fish and chicken on a broilmaster grill. and I have only great things to say about the mat. I spray a bit of olive oil on after it is warm and then grill my food and it is great!!!

When we saw the Grill Friends Grill Mat Flexible Non-Stick 11-3/4 by 15-3/4 Inch Silicone Grilling Mat on Amazon, we thought this might be an answer to an ongoing problem we've had smoking fish. My wife and I do quite a bit of smokin' and grillin'. We have Braunfels Black Diamond Barbecue Smoker (which, I believe, is now made by Charbroil), as well as several other smokers and grills, and like to do a variety of meats, using a variety of woods. We often smoke trout, haddock, salmon, and catfish. As part of the brining and curing, we use drying racks to let the fish obtain the necessary patina, prior to the smoke, and actually use the racks in the smoker. Well, as you can imagine, cleaning the racks can be a bit of a problem, even after spaying them with various non-stick products. This mat looked like a perfect solution. Since the smoking heat rarely goes above 240 degrees, it was well within the specs. While there was little or no sticking to the mat and the fish got the necessary smoke, the mat had a very unpleasant smell (rubbery) and some of that was imparted to the fish. While I understand the Grill Mat was designed for shorter, indirect grill, it was disappointing to find out that it did not seem suited for an application that fell within the manufacturer's parameters. It is for this reason we are giving 3 stars. I don't know if the rubbery smell and taste would have occurred if we had used it in indirect grilling (shorter contact with heat and meat), but we have no intention of using it again.
