Pricey badge reels, can get much cheaper generic Feb 09, 2009

Great quality, speedy delivery - however, same item can be found for far less at any major store. The circular part is attached to the AeroGarden trellis brackets (separate item, orderable from Amazon). The little clear plastic loop goes around the main stems/branches of any tall vegetable growing in your AeroGarden - like cherry tomatoes, green and snap beans, mini bell peppers and eggplants) to keep the stalk upright, so growth is upward and under light hood instead of laterally (as is their nature) so as to keep within range of the grow lights. The "reel" mechanism allows just the right amount of tension to hold the stalk upright while lengthening while the stalk grows. HOWEVER, office and warehouse workers the world over know these same items as "badge reels", used to attach a security badge to clothing while allowing it to be held away from the body to swipe thru badge readers. Consequently, they can be found much cheaper (than the AeroGarden brand shown here) at any major office supply or hypermarket store (like Walmart).

Yes, you can go to Wal-Mart & get some for 3/$1.88. Be aware, though, that those have a MUCH smaller strap to go around the plant stem, which is okay if you are very careful (don't want to knock off any flowers or tomatoes, for instance). I used the 2 that came with my AeroGarden6 Elite in the middle of each side to wrap around the main stem, & 4 more of the Wal-Mart ones (1 on each side of each of the AeroGarden ones) to hold up side branches. Worked okay, as I said, but they were much harder to attach carefully, & there is NO wiggle room for even the smaller branches. BTW, I planted my garden Jan 29, it is April 22 & I have a dozen or more tomatoes (the biggest of which is almost ping-pong ball size) & more flowers blooming. Yeah!!! I can't STAND store bought cardboard tomatoes, even the ones sold on the stem are not the same as 'real' ones; wish I had talked myself into this planter much sooner & this is my 1st attempt at gardening!

By Kordence Got these for our tomato plants for our Aero Garden. They work great at keeping things up. We also have another hydroponic system set up and they work great for those as well.
